Denis Smirnov was Fargo’s own hero on Hometown Heroes Night scoring two goals as the Force pulled off a 3-2 overtime win against the Des Moines Buccaneers in front of 4,007 fans at Scheels Arena.

“Tonight was a more complete game,” Head Coach John Marks said. “It was nice to get two points tonight after the loss last night.”

It took the Force over 10 minutes to get a shot on goal in the first period but once they finally did, they didn’t stop.

With 6:55 to play, Denis Smirnov put the Force on the scoreboard off assists from Justin Baudry and Colton Poolman.

Two minutes later Fargo went on the power play and just one second after Des Moines was back at full strength Fargo’s Mikey Eyssimont wrapped around the back of the net and made it 2-0. Victor Bergstrom assisted the Eyssimont goal.

In the first fifteen minutes of the second period both teams had two power play opportunities but neither team had any luck putting the puck in the net.

“It’s hard to score in this league and a lot of games are the difference of one goal,” Marks said.

But Des Moines made it 2-1 with 5 minutes to play after Force goalie Robbie Beydoun went for a save and fell and couldn’t get back up to cover the net, allowing Corey Schueneman to score.

In the third period Des Moines’ Nikita Pavlychev was called for a minor penalty with 13 minutes to play. With 12 seconds remaining in the Force power play, Mike Babcock was called for a penalty forcing both teams to play short handed.

During the 4-on-4 play Corey Schueneman shot the puck right passed Beydoun to tie the game up 2-2 with 11 minutes left in the third period.

With 37 seconds remaining in regulation, Tanner Karty was called for a delay of game penalty putting Fargo on the power play, which eventually carried over to overtime.

In overtime with just 11 seconds to spare on the one-man advantage, Denis Smirnov scored a power play goal to make it a Force victory.

The Force start their five game road streak as they head to Omaha to take on the Lancers tomorrow night. The Force return to Scheels Arena on January 30th and 31st to take on the Bloomington Thunder.
