Down 2-0 in the first the Force rallied back taking the game into overtime. In his first start of the season Force goaltender Louden Hogg stopped 26/30 and made some huge saves to take Fargo to OT. Brett Link fired in his second of the season and Cooper Gay recorded his first USHL goal. Force forward Gustav Portillo tied the game at 3’s in the second with a penalty shot but Waterloo’s Tyler Kotelecky finished it with a 2v1 breakaway goal in overtime.
Waterloo took an early lead after a puck snuck through traffic past Hogg at 1:48 into the opening frame. Both teams saw scoring opportunities throughout the period, but it wasn’t util the final minute that another tally was added. Seven seconds into the powerplay Black Hawks forward Garrett Schifsky hammered the puck home through a crowd in front of the net. The Force headed to the locker room down 0-2 with work to do in the second.
Fargo came out swinging with a top shelf snipe from Bret Link off a pass from Kyle Smolen at 2:15 into the period. 30 seconds later Cooper Gay fired in his first USHL goal, banking one in off a Waterloo player straight out of a faceoff at the left dot. Tyler Kostelecky gave the Black Hawks the lead once again after stealing the puck from the Force at the blue line. Two minutes later Force forward Gustav Portillo was tripped on a big scoring opportunity and awarded with a penalty shot. The Sweden native made the most of his opportunity ripping one in stick side to tie the game back up at 3’s apiece.
Both goaltenders played a solid third period keeping the final frame scoreless on both sides. Once again, the Force found themselves in penalty trouble battling off 3 Waterloo PP opportunities, for a 6/7 penalty kill record on the night. In the final few minutes Louden Hogg made some huge saves for the Black & Blue sending the game to a 3-3 overtime.
Tyler Kotelecky ended the game in OT on a 2v1 breakaway dealing the Force a 4-3 OT loss.
